You Can Always Come Home…

The saying “my door is always open” or “you are always welcomed at my house”, gets thrown around a lot, but just how many people can truly say this is the case. Throughout our lives, we simply accepted that our house was the place us and our friends could hangout. I can easily remember my mother’s living room being filled with loud, rambunctious teenage boys shouting at the television over video games or a football match. She would always have food and snacks to feed the masses and inquired about their families and of course their grades. Her only rules were no foul language and no violence, but this was never an issue as we ourselves enforced those rules, so we respected her. There were even times when my mother’s house was a haven for friends in need. A close friend was attempting to leave an abusive relationship, without asking for details, my mother simply opened her doors, feeding, clothing and merely mothering my friend. Though she may not of realised, these acts reinforced in us the importance of being a good person, never hesitating to spread kindness and to always help someone in need.

NOTHING BUT LOVE

Over the years and yes with maturity, you begin to reflect on days gone, especially as I, (R1) became a mother- I find myself asking…”just how did mom do it all?” For anyone who hasn’t had the privilege to know or meet my (our) mother, I can quite honestly say that you are missing out. She holds a presence of energy, laughter, wit mixed perfectly with honesty and compassion. Throughout the years, even when we may have disagreed and not seen eye to eye, deep down I always respected her and her opinions because no matter what, I knew it came from a good place. I know, I know, to you she may not be exceptional, but the respect and love we have for her cannot and will not be measured, even more so now that she is a “Nana”.

When thinking about this blog post, one of our favourite Jason Mraz songs came to mind, where the lyrics reads:

93 million miles from the sun
People get ready, get ready
‘Cause here it comes it’s a light
A beautiful light
Over the horizon into your eyes
Oh, my, my
How beautiful
Oh my beautiful mother
She told me
Son in life you’re gonna go far
If you do it right
You’ll love where you are
Just know that wherever you go
You can always come home

Totally worth giving it a listen (just a little marking for you there Mr Mraz 😉 ), it’s such a wonderfully honest and lovely song, which resonates as we have ALWAYS known, that no matter what, no matter where we are in life or the world- we can ALWAYS come back home.
We’d LOVE to hear your swoon worthy songs that make you just want to ugly cry… don’t look at us like we’re CRAZY.. You know what we’re talking about :D.

HOW MUCH DO WE LOVE YOU,
LET US COUNT THE WAYS

Now that we’ve got the gushy stuff out of the way, let us lighten the mood with a quick list of what makes her so unique and utterly lovable.
  1. The bizarre way she says: “sandwich/Rapunzel/squirrel” (the list is actually longer).
  2. Anyone and everyone is always welcome, she will always make you feel at home and comfortable.
  3. How easy she makes it for us to come to her in our time of need, or when we just need a little time to “check-in with mom”. Her door is LITERALLY always open.
  4. The silly sounds and faces that she makes when she gets excited over the little things in life… (OH those facebook videos….. What would she do without them lol.)
  5. Her obsession with unlit candles, throws, decorative pillows and all things frilly (though we all know that with time… R1 will be falling IN mom’s footsteps in the throw department).
  6. Her bizarre love for cherries, especially Black Cherry ice cream (trust us…eww).
  7. Her teenage crush on Denzel Washington, LL Cool J and Shemar Moore..
What kind of sayings have you always heard from your mom, that has ALWAYS stuck with you? Leave a comment, because we LOVE hearing from you!
Until next time; that was a little RnR….
