Oh Motherhood!

Oh Motherhood,
Such a simple, three syllable word,
Yet, it holds such weight,
An anchor,
Not only the weight of childbirth,
But the communal weight of child rearing,
The countless women and men who do a parent’s job,
The aunts, uncles, grandparents, whether by blood or proximity,
All of the grit,
Without all of the physical link,
The teachings they provide,
The valuable lessons about community,
The people who step in to help the single mothers,
The ones who show up to give parents a break,
The ones who take our minis for no special reason bar to spend time with them,
Motherhood is continuing the cycle of love,
Connecting us to ourselves and to others,
Motherhood isn’t just the women who physically birth countless children,
Motherhood is very much the collective voices of our ancestors,
Stories, traditions, rites of passages,
Handed down from generation to generation,
Motherhood is all of us.
